EJ
‘Anything that makes you the individual you are?’ say’s EJ - ‘Keep it. Own it.’ EJ was born Edwina Johnson in Stockholm, Sweden. Her single, Barbadian doctor mother uprooted her to spend time with an extended family in Gothenburg. ‘We had a great musical community there. And the racial mix really mixed. Iranians, Turks, a big Somalian community. It all worked together.’ She attributes her musical genealogy to her father, an Afro-Cuban guitar wizard. ‘But music has been in me since day one,’ she adds. Her initial musical awakenings were a mix of the sacred and the secular, something that you can hear perfectly attuned in the irresistible gospel-inflected semi-accapella of her debut single Mama, I’m Gonna Sing. ‘My grandmother took me to church every Sunday. The house was swarming with grandchildren. I had that mix of church singing and then getting back to her house and seeing cousins breakdancing, listening to Michael Jackson and Neneh Cherry. Moving to London at the age of 12, EJ found a whole new set of experiences and influences. “I absorbed it all” she says. Expect to be blown away from her future anthems “Bangers & Mash” and “Supersize”.

I Am A Camera
It was a chance meeting while escaping from the burning wreckages of their former incarnations - Ian and Francesca collided and sparked an idea for a new band –  I AM A CAMERA.  It grew and grew in more discussions over multiple drinks in Manchester’s dive bars and London’s clubs of disrepute. They were both over everything and wanted something more: Melancholy machines and hard beats. Inspired by the likes of John Carpenter / ‘Assault On Precinct 13’, Robert Mapplethorpe, Spike Jonze, Brian Duffy and HAL from “2001:Space Odyssey”, the electronica duo deliver Torch Songs for the 21st Century. Serving up stories of illicit affairs, bitter trophy wives, betrayal and revenge, I AM A CAMERA are ready for their own close up. The band will be releasing “Commuter Love” as a free download with a bundle of mixes on December 5th, followed by their first single release in early 2012.

Jodie Marie
Raised in Narberth, Wales - isolated and disinterested in the pop charts - Jodie Marie was brought up on a diet of blues and Bonnie Raitt, leading her to a soulful and genuine sound which, whilst bringing to mind the work of the greats such as Joni Mitchell, Tim Buckley and Carole King, hordes an original style and the emotional depth of her writing belies her mere 20 years of age. Discovered by Transgressive management, when Toby L’s father was staying in a B&B during a trip to his hometown in Wales.Overhead speaking of his son’s involvement in the music industry over breakfast, he was instructed by the landlady to check out the local plumber’s daughter’s music, and found a spell-binding voice which he couldn’t ignore. Now signed to Decca to re-launch the classic Verve record label, Jodie Marie follows a strong lineage of artists - from Nina Simone and Billie Holliday to the Velvet Underground - and is set to transcend trends and convention with her debut album that is due out in March 2012.

Lana Del Rey
Describing herself as the “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” and her music as ‘Hollywood Sadcore’, with a look she describes as ‘Lolita got lost in the ‘hood’, Lana Del Rey has already caused a major stir on You Tube with her self made videos. Just as her D.I.Y video for ‘Video Games’ hit around the 500,000 hits mark it was promptly banned. Lana’s songs, including  ‘Video Games’ and ‘Blue Jeans’, come out of a mixture of her love of David Lynch, Black and White 50’s movies, Coney Island, Hip-Hop and heartbreak. With her first UK live dates selling out in minutes and an album pencilled for 2012 Lana Del Rey seems set for musical stardom. With “Video Games” a Top Ten hit, Q Magazine voting her the “Next Big Thing” at their recent awards and a fabulous debut album to come, Lana is ready for her close up.

Pepper
“One day sitting at home watching TV, the next I’m sitting in the studio with Dizzee”
As a general rule, the last place you’d expect to find the future of British pop would be on a TV talent show. But from the moment it was announced that contestants on Sky 1’s talent quest Must Be The Music would be performing their own songs, and that the judging panel would include E3 microphone ambassador Dizzee Rascal, it was clear that a few surprises were on the cards. From there Katie Pepper found herself forging a unique songwriting partnership with one of the most respected - and formidable - figures in British dance music. Dizzee Rascal’s manager and mentor Nicholas “Cage” Detnon - a man with a production pedigree going back to the early days of UK garage, and co-founder of Dizzee’s trail-blazing independent label Dirtee Stank.  Soon finding herself in the studio with Dizzee, Pepper has been on the European circuit with Dizzee this summer performing with him at festivals as she prepares to release her debut album next year.

The Civil Wars
The Civil Wars are a magical new band fresh out of Nashville whose debut album ‘Barton Hollow’, will be released in the UK early in 2012. The band set the ‘Later with Jools’ studio alight recently with their debut UK TV performance which can be seen at http://youtube.com/watch?v=A-DB2btV2oQ .The stunning acoustic performance led to the band trending worldwide on Twitter immediately after the show and a huge surge in sales of the US import version of the album. Following a sell-out Union Chapel performance in September the band have announced a headline show at Shepherds Bush Empire on 19th March 2012. The band is an enigmatic duo comprised of California-to-Nashville transplant Joy Williams and her Alabaman partner, John Paul White. They are a huge DIY success in their homeland having independently sold over 200,000 copies of the ‘Barton Hollow’ album already through touring and word of mouth. The album reached Number 1 on the iTunes chart in the US to widespread critical acclaim for their music and live shows. Adele personally chose the band to support her on her recent US and UK tours and says ‘The Civil Wars are by far the BEST live band I have EVER seen.’ With flavours of blues, folk, Americana, country and classic singer-songwriter their sound is firmly rooted in the gothic American South.
